Context before conclusions
The method belongs beside the numbers.
- Source & scope
- The instrument, data source, exact test period, strategy version and complete trade sample will accompany the report.
- Execution & costs
- Entry/exit assumptions, commissions, slippage, position sizing and the actual trailing-stop assumptions must be stated.
- P&L units
- Points, cash P&L and percentage returns measure different things. Units and any starting capital will be identified before results are published.
- Monthly consistency
- Losing, flat and no-trade months will be retained. Claims about five years of monthly consistency require that complete monthly record, with costs included.
- What history can tell you
- Simulations depend on their data and assumptions. Past results do not guarantee future returns or prevent a losing trade or month.
